DRDA : JORHAT
NAME OF SHG : BINAPANI S H G
Activities : Horticulture, Gottary etc.

Indeed – The River Brahmaputra is a curse to them!

The people of village Pohardia under Majuli Sub-division have been experiencing the fury of flood over the years. Almost every year their smiling standing crops are inundated, their lovely homes shattered. Their lands are engulfed making them pauper.

Their needs were urgent and unavoidable. But Credit worthiness’ was practically nil. Hence no financial institution had come forward to provide credit at the risk of default.
Introduction of Self-Help Group movement change the Economic Horizon of the village economy.

One fine morning during the month of November, 1999 eighteen numbers of enterprising women organized a SHG named – Binapani Self-Help Group. They opened a common fund A/c in the local Sibsagar District Central Co-operative Bank, Kamalabari. The group of Women started to grow Robi Crops collectively and deposited their surplus amount in the common fund and raise the amount up to Rs.10,000/- within five months. The like-minded SHG members take collective decisions on all matters including the terms of Credit and repayment period. The group provides need-based loans to the members and they also repay the loan promptly on time.

Now, their common fund A/c convert into a source of cheap and easy credit delivery institution – A micro Bank of their own.

DRDA, Jorhat released Rs.10,000/- as Revolving fund and the Bank also sanctioned Rs.10,000/- as Cash Credit. The group utilized the amount in productive purpose and repay the loan amount on time which make the group Credit worthy in the eyes of the Bank.
There is a tremendous scope for goat rearing in the riverine Island known as ‘CHAPARI’ in the area. The group has taken up goat rearing as their key economic activity. The Sibsagar District Central Co-operative Bank, Kamalabari branch has sanctioned Rs.2.40 lakhs for the Project. Now the average monthly income of each Group member is Rs.1500/- approximately.

Now, Binapani SHG – is not a mere cognitive word for the group members, rather it represents their existence and identity and an inspiration for others.
